Hard to say where exactly this style came from. They seemed to have been always around while I was growing up; always in canvas, stencil printed, with heavy webbing. My father used them for a tool bag and my mother used them for kids' stuff, we used them when we went bush. Now our company builds the BURRO DUFFLE BAG in 20oz drought canvas, using brass hardware and thick cotton webbing trimmed with cowhide and riveted. External security pocket and fully lined in 100% cotton. Removable shoulder straps adjust from both ends ensuring that the shoulder padding remains in place.
